After arriving at the Manas Transit Center air base in Kyrgyzstan, the TV folks I was traveling with, were more interested in shooting video the pallets of donated kid’s coats they brought with them being unloaded from our KC-135 Stratotanker. I wandered over to the tanker next to us and found mechanic Dustin Harder, who happened to be from my town of Spokane. I shot this photo in at different angles and perspectives until I found this one where the light was coming from behind. My D3s set at 6400 iso pulled out the shadow detail. For just a few frames I set the camera on the ground and fired a burst. The low angle was the best. I got the photo we used for page one Sunday after only being in Kyrgyzstan for a few minutes.
